Abstract

"The postpartum period is considered a significant transitional phase in a woman's life, marked by radical changes on physical, psychological, and social levels. Postpartum depression represents one of the most prominent challenges women face during this stage, significantly impacting maternal health, child development, and family cohesion. The importance of this research lies in highlighting the potential role of Yemeni social customs in preventing this type of depression, within the crucial need to understand cultural factors that may contribute to supporting women's mental health during this critical period. This research primarily aims to:

 * Identify the most significant Yemeni social customs and traditions followed during the postpartum period, including methods of dealing with the mother, types of support provided, and practices related to breastfeeding and nutrition.

 * Determine the extent to which these customs and traditions affect the prevention of postpartum depression, by studying the relationship between the practice of these customs and the reduction of depression rates.

This research adopted a [descriptive and quasi-experimental] methodology, aiming to collect comprehensive and diverse data on social customs and postpartum depression. Data were collected from a sample of 50 women in their late stages of pregnancy in the Haziz area/Sanhan district, selected randomly. The research used data collection tools, including: a questionnaire: a comprehensive questionnaire was designed, including a list of the most important social customs followed during the postpartum period and their impact on postpartum depression. The research results showed that there is a positive relationship between practicing certain Yemeni social customs and lower rates of postpartum depression, such as strong family support and attention to proper maternal nutrition. Social support plays a crucial role in promoting women's mental health after childbirth, as women who receive strong support from their families and friends are less likely to develop depression. The research revealed other factors that may affect postpartum depression, such as economic status, marital relationship, and previous childbirth experiences. Yemeni social customs and traditions play a vital role in preventing postpartum depression, and reinforcing these customs can contribute to improving women's mental health and preventing negative complications that may result from depression.

 * There is a need for further studies to identify the cultural and social factors that contribute to supporting women's mental health during the postpartum period, and to develop effective interventions for the prevention and treatment of postpartum depression.

Based on these results, the study recommends [providing some practical recommendations, directed to the relevant groups]:

 * For society: the necessity of raising community awareness about the importance of social customs and traditions in women's mental health, and encouraging families to provide the necessary support to women during the postpartum period.

 * For health institutions: developing integrated support programs for women in the postpartum period, including mental health care services, awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and proper nutrition, and providing social and moral support to women."
