Common Side Effects and Complications of Anesthesia in Public Hospitals in Sana'a

Abstract

 

Background: Elective surgeries performed under general or spinal anesthesia can carry various side effects and complications. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, sore throat, shivering, and drowsiness. More serious complications, though rare, can include respiratory depression, cardiac arrhythmias, and nerve damage. Careful patient monitoring and appropriate anesthetic management are crucial to minimize these risks. Patients should be informed of the potential side effects and complications prior to their procedure in order to set realistic expectations.

 Objective: To identify the common side effects and complications in elective surgery under general and spinal anesthesia at Public Hospitals.

Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on Public Hospitals in Sana'a 2024-2025. Data were collected through a closed questionnaire. Data were analyzed using (SPSS version 24).

Results: The sample was 43, mean±sd of age was 27.4±14.8, while weight was 56.7±15.8, and height was 1.6±0.2, and BMI 24.1±7.3, majority of sample in gender was male 62.8%, majority of sample in Pervious surgery with anesthesia was GA 53.5%, previous complication was more than half 69.8%, and previous side effects was more than half 79.1%, most preoperative vital signs was normal,  general anesthesia the most drugs used was propofol, spinal was Marcaine, the side effect associated with general anesthesia was less than half 32.6%, side effect associated with spinal anesthesia was less than half 39.5%, most side effect associated with general anesthesia was bradycardia, bleeding and shivering, most side effect associated with spinal anesthesia was hypotension and headache, The most caused of side effects was surgery stimulation and drugs
