Background & Objectives:
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that significantly compromises physical, psychological, and social well-being. This study evaluated Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and identified its associated determinants among patients diagnosed with psoriasis attending Al-Thawra Modern General Hospital in Sana'a, Yemen.
Methods:
A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in 2023 involving 56 psoriasis patients. Data were collected through structured clinical assessments and the validated Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test (p < 0.05) to examine associations between demographic/clinical parameters and DLQI levels.
Results:
Overall, 44.7\% of patients experienced a severe impact on their quality of life (42.9\% very large effect, 1.8\% extremely large effect), while 26.8\% showed a moderate effect. Females constituted 66.1\% of the sample, and early onset (\le 40 years) was documented in 83.9\% of patients. Among socioeconomic and clinical variables, monthly family income showed a statistically significant association with DLQI scores (p = 0.046). Clinical severity, disease duration, and Body Surface Area (BSA) did not demonstrate statistically significant relationships with DLQI impairment (p > 0.05).
Conclusion:
Psoriasis imposes a substantial negative impact on patients' daily lives in Yemen, with socioeconomic background—particularly family income—serving as a key determinant. Comprehensive management strategies should incorporate both medical care and psychosocial support to improve overall patient outcomes.
