Abstract

Background: Considering the high prevalence and risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in hospitalized patients and the existence of different prophylaxis methods, evaluating the rational administration of heparin is an important priority. This study aimed to evaluate the consistency of heparin administration compared to guidelines in patients admitted to 48 Model Hospital. Methods: In this prospective drug use evaluation study, 80 hospitalized patients receiving venous thrombosis prophylaxis in surgical wards were enrolled. Demographic and clinical data were collected from patient records, and checklists based on the Caprini Questionnaire were used to evaluate compliance with guidelines. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21. Results: Of 80 patients, 70 (87.5%) were male and 10 (12.5%) were female; most (95.0%) received heparin 5000 U every 12 hours as prophylaxis, with 97.4% compliance with guidelines. Conclusion: Most male surgical patients received heparin as prophylaxis without comorbidities, with elevated platelet counts often linked to blood or platelet transfusion.
