Abstract

This study aimed to conduct an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the establishment of 21 September Medical City by identifying the implications of locating the medical city near residential areas, and the impacts resulting from medical waste and its effects on the environment and human health. The study utilized descriptive-analytical and quantitative approaches to determine the current location and the expected impacts upon project implementation. Data collection relied on questionnaires and analyses. The study reached a set of results, the most important of which are:

  • There is a strong and positive relationship between conducting an environmental impact assessment study and mitigating the expected environmental impacts of establishing 21 September Medical City.
  • The medical city has an impact on the air quality in the study area.
  • The medical city has an impact on the water quality in the study area.
  • Noise generated by the medical city has an impact on the environment in the study area.
  • The environment has an impact on the medical city.

The study recommended the necessity of conducting environmental impact assessment studies prior to establishing medical cities, and the need to follow the proposed solutions provided by the expected impact mitigation procedures. It also emphasized the necessity of establishing and forming a media department whose tasks include clarifying risks, raising public awareness, and developing the capacities of workers in medical waste management. Furthermore, the study suggested conducting the following future research to complement the current study:

1- Studies to evaluate the environmental impact of the medical facility.

2- Studies on modern treatment methods for medical waste and their economic impacts.

3- Conducting further studies targeting costs associated with medical waste and their economic impacts.

4- Studies related to landfill management (dumpsites/landfills) for waste in general and medical waste in particular.

5- A study on investment through waste and waste recycling.
