Abstract

Background: Maternal and neonatal tetanus are major causes of neonatal and maternal mortality in developing countries. Tetanus vaccination during pregnancy is the most effective way to prevent it.Objective: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of pregnant women regarding tetanus vaccination at Al-Thawra General Hospital in Sana'a City, Yemen. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample of pregnant women attending the antenatal care clinic at Al-Thawra General Hospital in Sana'a during 2020. Data were collected using a questionnaire. Results: The study revealed that the level of knowledge about tetanus vaccine, dosage schedule, and prevention of neonatal tetanus was moderate among most participants. There was a relationship between educational level and receiving vaccination. Attitudes were generally positive towards the importance of the vaccine, but some incorrect practices were still present. Conclusion: The study recommends enhancing health education for pregnant women about the importance of tetanus vaccine and vaccination schedule, and activating the role of health care providers in counseling during antenatal visits to reduce neonatal tetanus. Keywords: Pregnant Women, Tetanus Vaccine, Neonatal Tetanus, Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices, Sana'a, Yemen.
