Abstract

Background: Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children worldwide and contribute to approximately one-third of under-five deaths in low-income countries.

Aim: This study aimed to assess the risk factors of acute respiratory infection among children under five years of age attending public hospitals in Sana'a City, Yemen.

Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire from a sample of 412 children.

Results: More than half (61.4%) of the participants were aged between 1 and 12 months, and 62.9% were male. The majority (76.2%) of the study participants had acute respiratory infection, while 23.8% did not. Most participants (87.1%) had no chronic lung diseases, and 78.1% had no family history of diseases. More than half (55.3%) had not received vitamin A during the previous six months.

Conclusion: There were statistically significant associations between acute respiratory infection and hospital name and room number. Significant associations were also found between acute respiratory infection and nutritional status, family history of diseases, exposure to wood smoke, smoking pollution, and exposure to wood and cow dung.
